What is an oil change basically?
One of the basic needs of any automotive is a timely oil change. A car can't operate without the oils ensuring that its parts are working smoothly. It is very much essential for a vehicle’s long life. But as it is a machine oil becomes less effective or ineffective after a time of use and it should be replaced with fresh oil. Ignoring this can have adverse effects on the various parts of your car and rapidly deteriorate their life. What is an Oil Change? The process of changing the old engine oil with fresh oil is known as an oil change in the automotive industry. It needs to be done by a professional to ensure proper drainage, cleaning and, then, refilling. Inefficient work would result in the old oil mixing up with the new oil you add and reduce its effects as well. How is it done? When the drain screw, found at the bottom of the engine, is opened, it discharges all the oil. A disposal container is used to collect this and disposed of later on. After draining the old oil, the drain screw is placed back into the car's pan and the old filter is replaced. After that, new oil is poured into the vehicle by accessing the spout placed at the top of the engine. One needs to know the minute details of the oil change process to ensure improvement in the car’s performance levels. Need for an Oil Change Harrow The oil of the machine should be changed after some time, as it becomes old. It may cause problems like petroleum sludge, which might get stuck into the engine and causes several problems. This can furthermore lead to disturbance in moving the parts of the vehicle and discomfort to passengers. The major signs of this problem are unnecessary sounds and vibrations from the engine. Ignoring these sound and vibrations can lead to a major issue known as engine-seizure. This basically means that the engine will be useless. And also means that you have to buy a new engine. What goes wrong? Engine oil would rarely need to be changed. However, it is due to the piston that it needs to be done. Soot and water from combustion process seep past the piston rings and get into the crankcase and mix with the oil. This means that it deteriorates not only the oil but the parts it has escaped through as well. Being used in high temperatures reduces its quality as well. There are some myths about the oil change. One of them is that a driver has to take his car for an oil change after every 3,000 miles of driving. However, if he drives the vehicle properly and in normal conditions, up to 7,500 miles can be achieved without the need for an oil change. Normal conditions stand for no towing, less driving in excessive traffic and less uphill driving. Which is the right oil for your car? First of all, it depends on your car. Check the owners manual to know the manufacturer’s recommendation regarding the same. In most cases they are correct. (I say most because today I saw a manual for a car where I know a 5W-30 should be used, but the manual says to use 15W-40.) Cars engine oils are not universal. Different engines have different requirements. Thus, the oil viscosity varies from engine to engine as well. Therefore, every manufacturer recommends the best engine oil for their cars. There are two things that you need to check about the engine oil before using it for your car. They are: API Rating SAE Viscosity Rating Refer to the owner’s manual of your car to know the API and SAE rating you should be looking for, and choose the suitable oil for your engine.
